What are platelets?
Platelets are a blood component which helps form clots to stop bleeding.
Who needs platelets?
Patients being treated for cancer, leukemia or other serious diseases. Many lifesaving medical treatments require platelet transfusions. Cancer patients, those receiving organ or bone marrow transplants, victims of traumatic injuries, and patients undergoing open heart surgery require platelet transfusions to survive.
Because platelets can be stored for only five days, the need for platelet donations is vast and continuous.
Who can donate platelets?
If you are in good health, age 17 or older, and meet other blood donor criteria. The criteria are nearly the same as those for donating blood.
How often can I donate platelets?
Each country's health ministry has its own regulations but as a general rule you can donate platelets every 8 weeks and up to 24 times a year.
How long does it take to donate platelets?
A platelet donation takes about two hours.
Is donating platelets safe?
Yes! The donation does not significantly decrease the number of platelets in your body and the donated platelets are quickly replenished. All medical equipment is sterile and used once only. Medical staff always monitor donors.
How does it work?
The process is the same as a blood donation except that it takes a little longer. You register, have your blood pressure and a blood sample checked and then donate. It is that simple! Many donation centers have TVs and WiFi access, so you may relax or work while saving a life.
